DooWop40 is Indianapolis's latest face, and he is putting the city on his back. His music is a direct reflection of his experiences. He is poised to make a major impact in 2022.
I got out, started a company and I’m living like I’m still grinding!
What is your history, and what drew you into music?
I’m DooWop40, born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana (NapTown). We get it in like anywhere else. I grew up wanting the finer things in life, and since the age of 12 I was determined to get it by any means… I knew I wanted to be a rap star since the age of 9 when I saw my older cousin making music, and how he was moving.
When did you come to realize that music was the way for you?
When I seen that I could express my life through song form, possibly changing somebody else’s life with my story. It’s damn near therapeutic for me. I do it for the love, the money is just a plus!
How is your personality reflected in your music?
I get a lot of people telling me my music is deep. It comes natural cause I’m a Scorpio so I’m kinda laid-back till I figure out who I’m dealing with. While I’m laid-back I won’t talk too much. God gave us two ears so we can listen two times more than we talk. I do a lot of thinking and the thoughts come out in my music. Hella real life situations stored up in my mind that I bring out vividly, giving the listener a chance to see the world from my pov.
Do you remember the first song you wrote?
Yeah my verse was about running from the police on my moped, dipping through alleys, lost they ass then hit a party where I didn’t need my pistol cause it was in my hood. I was 12 then. “I steps out on 40th street and hops on my ride, I’m on the ped so I’m switching lanes from side to side” LOL
What does the music culture look like in the Naptown?

I see one’s staying persistent! When I study the game and see people who’ve won, persistence was the key factor! I feel like that’s what it’s go take for us to get in the door! We got some talent and we really down here living this $hit! Once we get in, I believe everybody that’s putting in the work go blow!
Where does your influence come from?
I grew up on E-40, UGK, Pac, Dipset, Future, C-Loc, Lil Boosie etc. Mfs that had some substance to they music! 40 might tell you how to outsmart the law when they tryna raid. These niggas nowadays go tell you how to get raided and caught LOL
If you had to sacrifice one skill, which would you least like to let go, and why?
I would say my HVAC skills. I did 10 in the feds and learned how to do that $hit through a trade class. I knew I wanted some major paper when I got back out, and knew I didn’t wanna hustle no more cause I went fed for some shit a nigga said. No dope. I’m like how can I do it better than that next time?! Lol So I got out, started a company and I’m living like I’m still grinding!
How would you describe your style of music?
I made my own genre, Conscious Trap Music. 90% Trap, 10% Conscious $hit that’ll make you think! If it was 90% conscious I would lose my audience before I even get my point across LOL Hit em with that Trap $hit and ease the rest in! I might tell you how to whip a 9 piece, make that bitch jump back 10 straight butter, then how to get your credit in the 700’s all in the same song! And the people go rock with it cause the way I’m breaking it down they can tell it’s coming from experience!
When you hop in the car what song of yours are you playing first, and why?
When I’m in the whip I’m playing unreleased music. Going over the instrumental making sure I got that mf all the way down before I go to record it. By time the people hear my new music, I already slapped it to myself a 1000 times lol So it’s like old to me and new to the world.
What differentiates you from the next “wannabe” rapper?
Any mf in my city that know me, can vouch that I lived just about everything I speak on…When I think of a wannabe rapper, I’m thinking of a mf that come in the game and think it’s about to happen overnight, then give up when it don’t come easy like that. You gotta make this $hit a lifestyle! Live the success that you want, CONSISTENTLY , till the world catch up to where you been all along!

When they catch up, make em pay up!
How do you plan to breakthrough?
One of my routes is to get out of town features. Go to they city for the videos! They get some of my fans, I get some of theirs! I’m in these different cities brushing shoulders with like minded mfs! Real recognize real so I’ll be building genuine relationships in the business.
What was the process like when you were writing Bet It Up?
I was in the feds in Beckley, WV when I wrote it. The feds ship you across the world so any mf from your state is damn near like your gang or family. In the chow hall you got a table for each state. I think it was up there, with another state at the time, so I’m walking to the chow hall with like four lil brothers. I’m walking in the back of them so I can see what they can’t see, and everything they see in front of them. We walking in and the thought just hit my mind, “Call and my young niggas hit for that bag, what you gon do when they get on your ass?!” Then from there I just paint the picture vividly.
Are you working on anymore releases?
I’m working on my album I’m dropping this summer. It’s basically done, but I gotta have my promo route in order before I drop.
What other artist you have on Yayo Club?
We got YAYO Jones, that just dropped “Breaking News”, YAYO 6ix fucking em staying consistent with the pressure, Tmoney YC, Rainy Dawg, and many more in the cut. It’s like a big family!
What are you going to accomplish this year?
I’m dropping my album and putting out a video to every song! Hitting the road and putting the brand in they face!
Anything else you would like to add before we put this in the books?
Tap In with the YAYOCLUB! We got plenty of heat to come! It don’t stop here; I got the business self-help book already finished and pressed up, just waiting to drop it on God’s timing! Then many more endeavors! Longevity is the key!
